Herbs have been the basis of many traditional medicines throughout the world since a long time and continue to provide remedies to mankind. It is basic source of medicine since beginning of human civilization. The recent article provides the information on Lagenaria siceraria (Mol) standl. commonly known as bottle guard which has been widely used as vegetable in India and is a good source of vitamins and minerals forming an excellent diet. The fruit pulp is pharmacologically studied for its cooling, diuretic antibilious, anticancer, antihyperglycemic, antihyperlipidemic and analgesic properties. Fruit is also reported to contain different amino acids, sterols (fucosterol, campesterol), flavone c-glycoside and legenin. This review presents the available literature on Lagenaria siceraria with respect to its ethnobotany, pharmacognostics, phytoconstituents, traditional uses and its pharmacological activity. This article will be helpful and informative for raising the interest in producing new formulations having economic value and useful for mankind.
